It wasn’t pretty by any means but in the end the Boonville Lady Pirates volleyball team still got the win Tuesday night on the road by beating the Marshall Owls in three straights 20-25, 25-19 and 25-21.
While the win improved Boonville’s record to 10-10-2 overall and 4-3 in the conference, head coach Morgan Sprigg said the girls came out pretty flat to start the match.
“The girls struggled all around during the first set,” Sprigg said. “It took us a set to come together and start playing as a team. Marshall has improved and since we saw them at our place a few weeks ago. They are hitting a lot stronger and it took us some time to adjust to that. We also had 12 serving errors, which it not like us and we cannot afford that at this level during this time. During the second and third set the girls finally came together and played their game. They picked it up on the floor and started to look like they were having some fun.
“I thought that Shayann did a great job last night running the offense. She was switching some sets up and her and Brynn were running the floor. Brynn Edwards hit the ball extremely well last night. She was finding the open areas on the floor and scoring. I thought that those two looked good together last night running the show. Like I said, Marshall has improved but I have seen us play better as a team. I was proud of them for not giving up and finishing strong.”
Senior Brynn Edwards was definitely strong at the net for the Lady Pirates with a team-leading 13 kills on 33 attack attempts. Edwards also led the team with 11 service points with five aces and nine digs along with two assists.
Shayann Potter finished the game with 26 assists along with five service points with one ace, three digs and one kill on four attack attempts while Kelsey Bishop added seven service points with four aces, four kills on 11 attack attempts, three digs and one assist. Lawren Luscombe added six service points with three aces along with five kills on 14 attack attempts, three digs and one block, Dana Lester with six kills on 16 attack attempts with four service points with one ace and one dig, MJ Goff with nine digs and one attack attempt, Brianna Walker with seven digs and four attack attempts, Jodie Bass with six digs and one attack attempt and Hana Cook with two kills on 15 attack attempts along with one service point with one ace.
In the JV match, Boonville defeated Marshall 25-23 and 26-24 to improve to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the NCMC.
Boonville JV coach Alex Wendell said she is proud of the girls for pulling out a win for not playing well. “Coming off about a 10-game hiatus, the girls came out flat,” Wendell said. “We weren’t communicating well on the floor and not moving our feet to the ball. We did have some good moments, which allowed us to maintain a lead in both sets.”
Taylor Frederick led the JV Lady Pirates with 12 assists along with eight digs, two kills on two attack attempts and two aces.
Lily Terrell finished the match with 11 digs, three blocks, three kills on 11 attack attempts and two aces while Makiya West added 10 digs, four aces and two kills on 10 attack attempts, Sophie Waibel with five digs, five kills on 10 attack attempts and two aces, Kennedy Renfrow with seven digs, three kills on 10 attack attempts and one ace, Carson Dee with two digs, four aces and one attack attempt,  Gabi Webster with four digs, Diamond Lewis with three digs and one kill on five attack attempts and Eliza Adams with two digs and one service ace.
