The New Franklin Lady Bulldogs softball team dropped a heartbreaker Monday night in the regular season finale by losing to La Plata in nine innings by a score of 3-2.
The Lady Bulldogs, who finished the season at 6-16 overall, mirrored La Plata in every inning with one in the first and one again in the fifth. Meanwhile, after three scoreless innings in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, La Plata scored what turned out to be the winning run in the top-half of the ninth for the victory.
New Franklin coach Ross Dowell said the girls showed major improvement after three days of practice.
“We had an opportunity to win it in the eighth,” Dowell said. “Our pitching was better with holding walks down and we made a lot of good defensive plays, we just have to get better in the bottom part of the order to get our run production up.”
Wood picked up the win in the circle for La Plata while Lauren Evans took the loss for New Franklin. Wood pitched all nine innings and gave up just two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out 15 batters.
For New Franklin, Alexia Sprick started the game and pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up one run on three hits and two walks while striking out one. Evans then came in and pitched 6 1/3 innings in relief and allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three batters.
