The Bunceton Dragons baseball team moved one step closer to the championship in the CCAA Tournament after beating the Higbee Tigers Saturday in Jamestown by a score of 3-1.
The Dragons, improving to 5-6 on the season, scored one run in each of the first, third and fourth innings to lead Higbee 3-0. Meanwhile, after two scoreless innings, Higbee rallied back with one run in the seventh to cut the lead back to two.
Bunceton coach Tony Turner said Saturday’s game was a nailbiter. “Rylee Knapheide through 70 pitches in six complete innings,” Turner said. Dillon Alpers closed the last inning giving up a run on a throwing error. The boys held strong to get a victory over Higbee and a trip to the conference championship.”
Rylee Knapheide picked up the win on the mound for Bunceton while Kirby took the loss for Higbee. Knapheide pitched the first-six innings and struck out nine batters while giving up two hits and two walks. Dillon Alpers then came in and pitched one inning in relief and allowed one run on one hit while striking out two batters.
Bunceton also out-hit Higbee 6-3, with Jason Burnett going 3-for-3 with two singles, one double and two RBIs. Mason Wells had one single and one RBI while Brayden Doyle and Dillon Alpers each with one single.
For Higbee, Hudson and Orton each doubled while Gibson singled.
The Dragons also played on Friday but finished on the wrong end against Russellville 11-1.
Bunceton scored its only run in the top-half of the first while Russellville plated four in the bottom-half of the first, one again in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Marcum pitched all five innings to pick up the win for Russellville while Jason Burnett took the loss for Bunceton. Burnett pitched 3 1/3 innings and struck out five batters while giving up 10 runs on 12 hits and one walk.
Russellville also out-hit Bunceton 14-2, with Stewart going 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI. Miller, Roe, Hickey and Marcum each had two hits.
For Bunceton, Dillon Alpers and Dylan Flatt each singled.
