Although its been a tough season for the New Franklin Lady Bulldogs softball, the game Wednesday night on Senior-Parents Night against the Harrisburg Bulldogs was as good as it gets as the Lady Bulldogs rallied with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth for a 9-8 victory.
While the win improved New Franklin’s record to 5-10 overall, head coach Ross Dowell said it was good for this group of girls to get a win on Senior Night. “Offensively we started off slow, but in the fourth inning we got some things going,” Dowell said. “However, we had way too many strikeouts in the game. The girls never gave up even after Harrisburg scored one run in the top of the seventh to go ahead and then three runs in the top of the eighth to go ahead. Credit a couple of freshman for some big hits with Kayce Hundley getting five RBIs and Kacie White getting the game winning hit in the bottom of the ninth.”
In a back and forth game all night, the Lady Bulldogs led 3-1 after four only to have Harrisburg rally back with three runs in the fifth to make it 4-3. Then, after playing to a 5-5 tie in the seventh and 8-8 tie in the eighth, New Franklin finally put an end to the game with the game-winning hit by White in the bottom of the ninth.
Alexia Sprick picked up the win in the circle for New Franklin by limiting Harrisburg to just four runs on five hits and nine walks in six innings. Sprick also struck out seven batters. Annie Benner then came in and pitched three innings in relief and allowed four runs on five hits and five walks while striking out two.
Fritts took the loss for Harrisburg despite striking out 19 batters.
New Franklin also out-hit Harrisburg 13-10, with Shelby Breshears having her best game to date by finishing 4-for-5 at the plate.
