Boonville Lady Pirates volleyball coach Morgan Sprigg had the perfect word to describe Tuesday night’s match against the Versailles Lady Tigers: flat.
After beating the Mexico Lady Bulldogs Monday night in Mexico, the Lady Pirates couldn’t seem to do anything right against Versailles while losing in two straight sets 23-25 and 22-25.
The loss dropped Boonville back below the .500 mark for the season at 7-8-1 overall.
“It seemed like they had other things on their minds than volleyball,” Sprigg said. “We have been playing inconsistently and we cannot afford that at this level. We seem to be lacking chemistry on the floor and it is really showing in the way we have been playing. Versailles was a decent team, but we could have beaten them. We beat ourselves last night due to the lack of effort and dumb mistakes on the floor. We have to be able to find what our problems are and get them solved quickly before districts roll around. I thought that Kelsey Bishop hit the ball well even though she only had three kills. Like I said I do not have much to say about this match other than we were lacking chemistry and effort on the floor.”
It’s easy to see where the Lady Pirates fell short while recording only 18 kills out of 73 attack attempts for 25 percent.
As for individual stats, Brynn Edwards had eight digs along with a team-leading five kills on 16 attack attempts, two blocks and two service points.
Lawren Luscombe finished the match with three kills on 15 attack attempts along with three blocks, three service points with two aces and two digs. Shayann Potter had a team-leading 15 assists, three digs, two kills on seven attack attempts and one service point while Dana Lester added four kills on 16 attack attempts with four service points, one dig and one assist, Kelsey Bishop with five service points with two aces, four digs and three kills on nine attack attempts, MJ Goff with a team-leading nine digs, five service points with one ace and two attack attempts, Jodie Bass with six digs and three attack attempts, Sophie Waibel with one dig, one block, one kill on four attack attempts and two service points and Lily Terrell with one attack attempt.
In the junior varsity match, Boonville fell in straight sets against Versailles 22-25 and 13-25.
Boonville JV coach Alex Wendell said the girls played extremely well the first set.
“I don’t think I have seen them play that well yet this season,” Wendell said. “They were talking, playing great defense, and were aggressive at the net. The second game, we kind of sunk back into our old ways. We had some issues with serve receive and defense that ended up getting us a little disorganized. Versailles was a really good team. I’m not upset by the loss, but I am frustrated with how they played the second set, knowing they could have played better.”
Makiya West led the JV Lady Pirates with six kills on 15 attack attempts along with five digs and one ace.
Kennedy Renfrow finished the match with six digs, two kills on nine attack attempts and one ace while Carson Dee added 12 digs, five attack attempts and one ace, Taylor Frederick with 10 assists and eight digs, Lily Terrell with five digs, two kills on 10 attack attempts and one block, Eliza Adams with seven digs and one kill on three attack attempts, Diamond Lewis with one block and one attack attempt and Gabi Webster with one dig.
