The Boonville Pirates soccer team was shutout for the third time in five matches Tuesday night while losing to the Battle Spartans 2-0.
The Pirates, dropping to 1-4 on the season, went into the half tied at 0-0 against Battle but then surrendered goals at the 43 and 59 minute mark to suffer the loss.
Boonville soccer coach Kaz James said Battle was a good possession oriented team.
“They had some creative players up top and put away their chances,” James said. “For Boonville, I thought we improved as a team and got better tonight even with the end result. Josh Chrisman played an awesome game in the midfield and did a great job of holding down the center. Luke Rehagen had some great chances on goal tonight, but just couldn’t find the net. I thought he stepped up tonight as a player and led by example for the younger players.”
Battle also dominated on shot attempts and shots on goal against Boonville. The Spartans finished the match with five shot attempts and eight shots on goal while Boonville had only two shot attempts and four shots on goal.
Boonville senior goalie Avery Reardon, meanwhile, finished the match with 11 saves.
Both teams had three fouls in the match.
In the junior varsity match, Boonville defeated Battle 3-0 to improve to 3-1-1 on the season.
James said the Boonville JV squad played a strong game against a tough Spartan defense. She said all three goals were scored in the second half, when the Pirates found the rhythm.
After playing to a 0-0 tie at the half, Boonville finally got on the board at the 44 minute mark on an assist from Sam Esser to Tyler Schuster. The Pirates added another goal at the 68 minute mark to go up 2-0 on the assist from Ethan Van Dyke to Gabe Lorenz. Then, at the 69 minute mark, Sam Esser scored on an unassisted goal to make it 3-0.
Boonville and Battle finished with one shot attempt each. Meanwhile, on shot on goals, Battle had five compared to four for Boonville.
Boonville goalie Lance Marshall, meanwhile, finished the match with five saves.
After Thursday’s home match against Marshall, the Boonville Pirates soccer team will host the Kirksville Tigers on Monday, Sept. 11th at Gene Reagan field starting at 5 p.m.
