The Boonville Lady Pirates volleyball team improved twofold from its last outing at home against the Hickman Kewpies.
While errors got the best of the Lady Pirates in a two set loss against Hickman, Boonville looked to be more relaxed in its second home meet of the season by beating Higginsville in two straight 25-9 and 25-17.
Boonville Lady Pirates volleyball coach Morgan Sprigg said the girls came out really strong last night and were ready to play.
“Lawren served eight straight points right off to get us going. The girls look fundamentally sound last night and were doing a lot of good things on the floor. We did not make a lot of silly mistakes or miss serves like we have been. The girls also looked like they were enjoying themselves on the floor and that is what I like to see. Our offense finally looked good and we were hitting the ball extremely well. We have been struggling with offense the last few games, but we turned the corner last night. I know Higginsville wasn’t the strongest team that we have played so far, but we managed to keep our composure and play our game.”
Of course it didn’t hurt that Boonville, who improved to 5-4-1 on the season, came out and took a commanding lead on the serving of junior Lawren Luscombe to make it 8-0, or that senior Dana Lester came back with an ace to extend the lead to 9-1. Meanwhile, after going up 12-1, the Lady Pirates continued to dominate the rest of the set while leading at one point 20-6 before ending the game on a kill by Lester to win 25-9.
In the second set, Sprigg said Higginsville’s Sandra Welborn served and scored six straight points to cut what was once a nine point deficit at 18-9, 19-10 and 20-11 to four at 20-16.
However the Lady Huskers scored only one more point for the rest of the set while Boonville finished the match with four straight points-three on serves by senior Kelsey Bishop and a block at the net by Luscombe.
“Welborn was a good server and it took us a few errors to get the ball back,” Sprigg said. “I was proud of the girls for finishing strong and not letting up. Hana Cook and Lawren Luscombe hit the ball extremely well. They were strong and powerful at the net. I thought that Shayann Potter also did a great job switching the sets up to run the offense and score. We as a team needed that win mentally and physically.”
Luscombe led the Lady Pirates with eight kills on 12 attack attempts along with eight service points with two aces, six digs and one block.
Brynn Edwards finished the match with 10 service points with one ace along with two kills on 16 attack attempts, four digs and one block. Shayann Potter had 22 assists, five service points, three digs and one attack attempts while Dana Lester added five kills on 12 attack attempts, three service points and one block, Kelsey Bishop seven service points with four aces, five digs, four attack attempts and one block, Hana Cook six kills on 11 attack attempts, two service points and one dig, MJ Goff four digs, one kill and two attack attempts, Brianna Walker two digs and one kill on one attack attempt and Jodie Bass with two digs.
In the JV match, Boonville defeated Higginsville in two straight 25-8 and 25-18.
Boonville JV coach Alex Wendell said the girls played really well together against Higginsville.
“We were able to put the pieces of offense together to match the success our defense has been having,” Wendell said. “I thought the girls communicated the best they ever have last night. Eliza Adams played excellent in the back row and really picked the team morale up.”
Sophie Waibel had five kills on 11 attack attempts along with five aces and three digs to lead Boonville’s JV.
Taylor Frederick finished the match with 12 assists and seven digs while Kennedy Renfrow added nine digs, three kills on five attack attempts and one ace, Lily Terrell with five digs, two aces and one kill on 10 attack attempts, Makayia West with five aces, two digs and two kills on seven attack attempts, Carson Dee six digs, Eliza Adams five digs, Gabi Webster three digs, one ace and one attack attempt, Jordan Brackman one dig and one kill on one attack attempt, , Gracie Sadler one dig and Diamond Lewis with one attack attempt.
