The Boonville Lady Pirates volleyball team fell in three sets Thursday night in the conference opener against the Kirksville Tigers, losing by the scores of 27-25, 17-25 and 24-26.
While the loss dropped the  Lady Pirates to 4-4-1 overall and 0-1 in the NCMC, head coach Morgan Sprigg said Kirksville came out ready to play and have improved so much from last year.
“I did expect this, but we definitely underestimated them as well,” Sprigg said. “We came out pretty flat and had a hard time coming out of it until the last set. We did manage to make a lot of silly mistakes and like I have said before you cannot do that against a good team. It looked like the girls were just not in it like they should have been. They are going to have to step it up if they want to have a winning season. Kirksville had some better hitters and a decent defense. We have been having a hard time scoring on offense. This works both ways, the defense was good but we also have to find the open area on the floor.”
Sprigg said the girls are also having trouble with finding that spot.
“We had no business losing that second set and I think that brought the girls down,” Sprigg said. “The third set was our best set, we came back from being down but we couldn't manage to get the win. I do believe that if we would have played smarter and had more energy we could have beat them. Brianna Walker and MJ Goff had a great defensive game. Their passes were where they we supposed to every time we just had a hard time running an offense. We have to learn how to hit over and through a block. Those two didn't let much pass them up as they were on the floor the whole night. I also thought that Lawren Luscombe played a good third set she stayed strong at the net. She was one that fought at the net trying to find the open area. This is not the outcome I wanted especially with our first conference game. But like I said Kirksville is a good little team and have us a run for our money. We will be working on more offense to prepare for Higginsville on Friday.”
Senior Brynn Edwards led the Lady Pirates with 11 digs along with five kills on 41 attack attempts and two blocks.
Shayann Potter finished the match with 26 assists, 10 digs, 10 service points and 12 attack attempts while Lawren Luscombe added seven kills on 32 attack attempts, four service points, three digs and two blocks, Dana Lester with eight digs, seven kills on 28 attack attempts and one service point, MJ Goff with 25 digs and eight service points, Sophie Waibel with two kills on 16 attack attempts with one block and one dig, Hana Cook with five service points with one ace, three kills on 17 attack attempts, one block and one dig, Brianna Walker with 11 digs, one assist and one kill on three attack attempts, Jodie Bass with seven digs, one assist and three attack attempts and Makayia West with two service points with one ace, one dig and one kill on three attack attempts.
