The Pilot Grove Tigers baseball team dropped its season opener on the road Friday night by losing to the Sturgeon Bulldogs 10-7.
The Tigers, 0-1 overall, had the game tied at 5-all after 4 1/2 against Sturgeon before giving up five runs in the bottom-half of the fifth to trail 10-5. Pilot Grove then sent across two runs in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Pilot Grove coach Derek Skaggs said the guys came out and played both sides of the field fairly well. “I liked what I saw at the plate and approaches from the players,” Skaggs said. “We moved the guys around when they got on base, however, we just came up a bit short. We see them in our next contest for our conference opener on Friday and I believe the boys will be ready.”
Austin Kollmeyer took the loss on the mound for Pilot Grove by giving up five runs on three hits and one walk in three innings. He also struck out two batters. Anderson Twenter and Bailey Quint also pitched in relief for the Tigers.
As for the hitting in the game for Pilot Grove, Kollmeyer went 3-for-4 with two singles, one double and four RBIs. Kealin Vinson also had three hits and one RBI while Bailey Quint finished the game with three singles, Donnavan Gerke with one single and one RBI and Hayden Krumm with one single.
For Sturgeon, Gage Snider went 2-for-4 with a single, double and two RBIs.
