The Boonville 12-year-old All-Stars had a rough start in the opening round of the Cal Ripken State Tournament Thursday night in Cape Girardeau by losing to Carthage 8-2.
While managing just four hits in the game, the Boonville 12 All-Stars also trailed Carthage from the first inning on while giving up two runs in the first and four again in the third. Boonville scored its first run of the ballgame in the bottom-half of the fourth to make it 6-1. Then, after Carthage plated two more runs in the top-half of the fifth, Boonville came back and added one in the bottom half of the inning to round out the scoring.
Colby Caton took the loss on the mound for Boonville by giving up six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five. Keaton Eads then came in and pitched two innings in relief and  surrendered two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one.
As for the hitting in the game for Boonville, Cody Caton went 2-for-3 with a single, home run and one RBI. Max Eckerle and Skyler Duncan each had one single while Isaac Marriott added one RBI.
For Carthage, Kinder, Jadwin and Tate each had two hits.
