Axis Seed couldn’t have scripted the fifth inning any better Tuesday night in opening round of the Cal Ripken Minor Postseason Tournament at the COCOBA ballfield.
Trailing 9-4 after 4 1/2 against Schlotzhauer, Axis Seed rallied back with six runs in the bottom-half of the fifth for a 10-9 victory.
Meanwhile, in the nightcap, Rt. B Cafe broke a 9-9 tie after 4 1/2 by scoring the winning run in the bottom-half of the fifth to win by the same identical score of 10-9.
Axis Seed will now play Tint Shop in the second round while Rt. B Cafe battles Huebert Fiberboard.
Needless to say things didn’t look good early on for Axis Seed as Schlotzhauer Auto broke a 0-0 tie with five runs in the third and two again in the fourth to make it 7-0. Meanwhile, after Axis Seed rallied back with four runs in the bottom-half of the inning to cut the lead to three at 7-4, Schlotzhauer Auto came back and tacked on two more runs to go up 9-4. Unfortunately for Schlotzhauer Auto, Axis Seed had the last at bat and made the most of the opportunity with six runs in the bottom-half of the fifth for the one-run victory.
Cooper Pfeiffer picked up the win in relief for Axis Seed while Kailen Vaca took the loss for Schlotzhauer Auto. Evan Bishop started the game for Axis Seed and struck out seven batters while giving up one run on one hit and four walks. Aiden Rapp then came in and pitched 1/3 inning in relief and allowed five runs on three hits and four walks. Meanwhile, after Clayton Schuster pitched one inning and issued two runs on one hit and two walks while striking out one, Pfeiffer came in and pitched 2/3 inning and yielded one run on one hit and one walk while striking out one batter.
For Schlotzhauer Auto, Jaeshua Barber pitched 3 2/3 innings and struck out 10 batters while giving up four runs on three hits. Vaca then came in and pitched 2/3 inning in relief and allowed six runs on three hits and four walks while striking out one.
Axis Seed also matched Schlotzhauer Auto with six hits, with Seth Thomas going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Clayton Schuster was 1-for-3 with one double and two RBIs while Evan Bishop added one single and two RBIs and Cooper Pfeiffer and Aiden Rapp each with one single and one RBI.
For Schlotzhauer Auto, Barber went 3-for-3 with three singles and one RBI while D’Avion Jones added two singles and one RBI and Kaleb Arnold with one single.
In the nightcap, Boonville Daily News jumped all over Rt. B Cafe early while leading 4-1 after 2 1/2 innings. However in the bottom-half of the third, Rt. B Cafe rallied back with six runs to go up 7-4. Then, after BDN tied the game at 7-all with three runs in the top-half of the fourth, Rt. B Cafe came back and tacked on two runs in the bottom-half of the inning to make it 9-7. But even that was short-lived as BDN added two more runs in the fifth to tie the game at 9-all only to have Rt. B Cafe score the go-ahead run in the bottom-half of the inning.
Dakota Troost was the pitcher of record in the game for Rt. B Cafe while Darrin Leonard took the loss for BDN. Lance Haynes started the game and pitched 1/3 inning, giving up two runs on four walks. Jailyn Patel then came in and pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief and allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out three. Meanwhile, after Payton Oeth pitched 1 2/3 innings and surrendered three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two, Dakota Troost came in and pitched 2/3 inning and issued two runs on two hits while striking out one batter.
Rt. B Cafe also had nine hits in the game, with Jailyn Patel going 3-for-3 with three singles. Dakota Troost finished the game with a home run and one RBI while Payton Oeth added one triple, Tynnir Matthews with one single and one RBI and Baylor Jackson, Jacob Thoma and Lance Haynes each with one single.
For BDN, Shawn Beach Reasons went 2-for-3 with one triple and three RBIs. Zeke Pritchett added two singles and one RBI while Rhad Leathers and Darrin Leonard each had one single and one RBI and and Collin Cramer with one single.
