Boonville seniors Philip and Joshua Udinyiwe knew it had to come to an end sooner or later.
They just figured it would be much later after advancing to sectional play in doubles in the district tournament at Mexico. While facing Fulton’s No. 1 team of Hayden Windsor and Justin Adams, who handed the Udinyiwes one of their two losses during the regular season, the Boonville duo just couldn’t seem to get over the hump while falling in two straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
Boonville Pirates tennis coach Stephanie Green said this match was impressive to watch.
“With only a few of the games not going to deuce and multiple break points, the Udinyiwes just came out on the short end of the score card too many times,” Green said. “They took the first game of the first set and made a good run at coming back in the second to be down 4-5. The final game went to break point twice and with some heavy serving and some errors on our part, Fulton was able to get the win.
“Of course we are disappointed to not be moving on to the state finals, but the work the guys have done over the last four years is nothing short of inspiring with a record in doubles of 30-13. They have earned all-district honors for the last three years and have qualified for sectional play the last two years.”
