For the second night in  a row, the Boonville Lady Pirates basketball team played the role of the spoiler in the 23rd annual California Invitational Tournament.
After knocking off No. 9 state-ranked California on Wednesday 55-39, the Boonville Lady Pirates basketball team came back on Thursday in the championship to upset No. 1 seed and No. 2 state-ranked Southern Boone by a score of 56-52.
While the win improved Boonville’s record to 12-1 overall, it also marked the 12th straight win for the Lady Pirates since the season opening loss against California back on November 21.
Boonville Lady Pirates basketball coach Jaryt Hunziker said what a week it has been ending with taking down No. 2 state-ranked Southern Boone.
“We fought through tired legs after playing three games in three nights which is unheard of,” Hunziker said. “I couldn’t be more proud of our team and what they accomplished. They weren’t going to let this one slip away. Jamie Lemmons took over in the fourth quarter scoring 10 points, including some crucial baskets late in the quarter. Making our free throws late in the game was huge for us including a couple from Brynn Edwards and one at the end by Kate Peterson to make it a two possession game with little time left on the clock. Hannah Fuemmeler had another great night scoring 17. Winning 12 straight says a lot about this team and how well they are playing.”
Nobody can argue how well the Lady Pirates are playing after knocking off two state-ranked teams in back to back games.
Nonetheless, the game was everything everybody thought it would be with plenty of offense, great defense and an exciting finish.
Luckily for Boonville, they had a little bit of everything on this night while outscoring Southern Boone when it counted.
As expected between these two teams, the game went back and forth with the Lady Pirates taking the first quarter 10-9 and Southern Boone winning the second 15-14 to tie the game at the half 24-all.
Although both teams struggled early offensively, the Lady Pirates felt lucky to be ahead after hitting only 3 of 8 shots from the field in the first quarter. Now the story was a little different in the second as Boonville hit on five of 13 shots.
As for Southern Boone, they had the only run in the first half with six straight during a minute and a half stretch in the second to go from trailing 15-10 with 6:53 left to lead by one at 16-15 with 4:58 remaining.
Boonville and Southern Boone also played to two ties in the first half at 7-7 and 24-all. As for the biggest lead in the first half, the Lady Pirates led 15-10 at the 6:53 mark after a three by junior Camryn Monteer. Southern Boone’s biggest lead, meanwhile, came with 28 seconds left in the half at 24-22.
The third quarter was just as close as the first-two periods with Southern Boone outscoring Boonville 16-14 to lead by two at 40-38.
Although the two-point deficit was only the second in the ballgame for Boonville, the Lady Pirates had plenty of chances to put the game away in the third while holding a seven point lead at 31-24 after a three by Monteer with 6:02 left. However over the next six minutes of the period, the Lady Eagles found their way back by outscoring Boonville 13-7.
Trailing by two with one quarter remaining, the Lady Pirates answered quickly with seven straight points on two free throws by Hannah Fuemmeler and back-to-back baskets by Jamie Lemmons to extend the lead to five at 45-40.
Fuemmeler and Lemmons also led a 5-0 run to push the lead to seven at 50-43 with 1:57 left. However over the next minute of the ballgame, Southern Boone’s Skyler Beeson couldn’t seem to miss from the outside while hitting three threes to cut the lead to one at 53-52 with 30 seconds left.
The Lady Eagles never got any closer in the ballgame as juniors Brynn Edwards and Kate Peterson both hit two straight foul shots each to seal the victory.
Jamie Lemmons finished the game with a double-double for Boonville with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Hannah Fuemmeler added 17 points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists while Camryn Monteer chipped in nine points, three steals, three assists and two rebounds, Brynn Edwards five points, five assists, two rebounds and two steals, and Kate Peterson with four points, six rebounds, five assists and one steal.
The Lady Pirates also finished the game shooting 47 percent from the field and 68 percent from the foul line.
For Southern Boone, Beeson had 17 points and Meagan Barnett with 16.
