The Boonville Pirates JV basketball team had a great start Thursday night on the road against the Centralia Panthers and that proved to be the difference in a 60-45 victory.
The Pirates, improving to 5-5 on the season, outscored Centralia in three out of the four quarters of play and led 15-5 after one, 30-17 at the half and 47-29 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the fourth, Centralia had its best quarter of the ballgame by outscoring Boonville 16-13.
Boonville JV coach Jesse Oswald said this was a great win for the JV tonight.
“We set the tempo early and stuck to our game plan,” Oswald said. “We got out to a quick lead early and never looked back. I thought our guards did a great job of applying a lot of pressure out front. Our bottom guys did an excellent job or closing out and forcing contested quick shots. I felt in the second half we didn't rebound as well, but we were able to withstand any run they tried to make with runs of our own. I thought everyone contributed and played hard.”
Avian Thomas led a balanced scoring attack for Boonville with 14 points. Kyle Chrisman chipped in nine while Josh Chrisman, Tyler Schuster and Tramell Coleman added seven points each, Trae Williams with five, Dylan Barnthouse with four, Kellen Brownfield with three and Jalen Butner and Tayshawn Bledsoe each with two.

The Boonville Lady Pirates JV basketball team outscored Centralia 9-7 in the first quarter but couldn’t sustain the lead while falling to the Lady Panthers Thursday night in Centralia.
The Lady Pirates, dropping to 6-3 on the season, trailed Centralia 21-13 at the half and 31-17 after three quarters of play before matching the Panthers with nine points in the final period.
“We came out with decent intensity, but we couldn’t hold onto it for long,” said Boonville JV coach Alex Wendell. “Centralia put the pressure on and we didn’t respond well. We had trouble scoring and rebounding, which led to Centralia scoring on second chance shots.”

For Boonville, Lawren Luscombe finished the game with 14 points while Zoe Coffelt added four, Jalyn Schnetzler and Grace Bronakowski each with three and Reese Lavers with two.
