The Boonville Daily News is a community information provider dedicated to supplying residents of Boonville and surrounding communities with a selection of opinion, in print and online, that considers an array of issues and viewpoints.

The goal of the Forum page in the print edition of the BDN is threefold.

First, the BDN seeks to provide an ongoing dialogue between readers and viewers, on the one hand, and its news and online editor, on the other. The BDN intends to fulfill this mission with an editorial from the news and online editor on the days the Forum page is published. That editorial is distributed both in print and online in order to invite conversation from those virtually connected to Boonville.

Second, the BDN seeks to actively publish the voices of community members, here and abroad, using the Letter to the Editor section on its Forum page. Letters to the editor must follow several guidelines that are intended to promote reasoned, focused and diverse dialogue. Letters that adhere to the following guidelines will be given priority consideration:

  • They must include the author's first and last name, and a phone number at which he or she may be reached.
  • They must be no longer than 300 words.
  • They must be the product of the author, not the product of another that has been copied or plagiarized.
  • They must include supporting documentation.

In an effort to maintain an excellent news product that adheres to industry and BDN standards, letters will be edited for style and grammar.

Third, the BDN seeks to provide representation in print for those engaging in conversations at BoonvilleDailyNews.com and on its accompanying social networking Web sites such as Facebook and Twitter. To do this, the BDN intends to publish some of those comments in its "Words from the Web" and "From the Guestbook" sections.

While the BDN values and appreciates the often thorough and well-written comments posted online, the BDN recognizes that the potential for anonymity online limits its ability to interact and exchange questions with commenters. Thus, these entries will not be edited for style and grammar and will not be vetted according to the guidelines identified for letters to the editor.

Nevertheless, online comments that adhere more closely to those guidelines identified for letters to the editor will be given priority consideration for print publication.

This editorial policy will take effect Monday, Sept. 21, 2009.

The BDN welcomes feedback on this policy and requests that recommendations for changes to it be made in person at the BDN's office, 412 High St. in Boonville; or to Nate Birt, news and online editor, by phone at 882-5335 or by e-mail to nate@boonville
