The Pilot Grove City Council reviewed an ordinance to renew their existing franchise agreement with AmerenUE at Monday night’s meeting. The agreement is for a period of 20 years; however, it was stated that if another electric provider were to come available in that time the city could explore alternatives. The ordinance will be posted at city hall for the next 30 days and if not opposed by 25 percent of voters will be approved at the January council meeting.
Also, at Monday’s meeting the council agreed to have city counselor Mike Conway look into creating an ordinance to prohibit vicious dogs from coming into the city.
In recent months, other cities have explored ordinances to ban pit bulls but in an effort to not discriminate against one specific breed decided to widen the ban. There are currently eight breeds of dog that the American Kennel Association has deemed vicious. Pilot Grove residents that currently have vicious dogs registered with the city will not be immediately affected.
The ban would prohibit new vicious dogs from being allowed in the city after the passing of the ordinance. Once a current dog dies or otherwise leaves the city the owner cannot replace it with another vicious dog. The council also noted that once a dog, of any breed, bites it becomes labeled as vicious.
The council also agreed to reimburse Mary Gerling for $590 following damage that occurred in her basement after a sewer backup. It was determined that the problem happened as a result of tree roots growing into the sewer line. It was reported that roots were removed and that the problem has been taken care of.
