As the value of the American dollar decreases and gas prices soar, it’s hard to get “pumped” for anything. Families are rethinking vacation destinations, some employees are quitting their jobs for lower paying ones closer to home, people are trading in their SUV’s for compact cars and others are riding their bikes.

SFC Neal Overstreet of Boonville is a  Training NCO at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in Rocheport. To save money, Overstreet rides his bike 20 miles to work three days a week.
Overstreet said by riding his bike, he saves $7.50 a day. That’s $22.50 a week, which is almost $100 a month. In one year, he would save more than $1,100. In reality, he’ll be saving even more money as gas prices will undoubtedly continue to rise. Overstreet said not only is he saving money, but riding his bike is also keeping him healthy.

On the other side of the pump, gas stations have been taking precautions to prevent drive-offs.
