As of this morning, Superintendent Mark Ficken had not answered four questions about The Pirate Press posed to him in an e-mail on Wednesday. The questions ask who wrote several comments on unsigned page proofs of the paper that were provided to the BDN under a Missouri Sunshine Law request for open records.
The e-mail, sent Wednesday night by news and online editor Nate Birt, read in part: “I had four questions for you, and I wanted to make sure that I made an effort to provide readers with your side of the story.”
On Friday, Principal Jay Webster sent an e-mail to Birt with responses to the questions posed to Ficken. Webster was not copied onto the initial request for comment. It is unclear who provided the questions to him. Ficken was copied onto Webster’s response to the questions.
“Mr. Birt, I have been asked to respond to your questions,” Webster wrote.
Among the findings presented in Monday's article:
- Webster states in his e-mail that he wrote the comments expressing content concerns on the page proofs. But it is unclear why his statement appears to conflict with that of student editor Emily Voss, who has told the BDN that Webster personally told her that he was OK with the proofs he had reviewed.
- Few e-mails provided to the BDN have anything to do with The Pirate Press. Most are related to personnel issues, student issues and athletics.
