Boonville Board of Education agreed  to replace the Community Sports Complex lighting at a special meeting Thursday.

Poles holding up lights over football and soccer fields were installed 37 years ago and damaged in a storm last month.

The board had considered replacing the lights when the district installed a new football field in 2008, but opted to wait until it had additional funding, president Charlie Melkersman said.

"Ultimately it was going to have to be done," Melkersman said. "The storm kind of pushed it in front of us much quicker than what we had anticipated."

The district will replace lights over the football and soccer fields, tennis courts and track. The equipment and installation is expected to cost the district $172,000.

The August storm altered the way the lights shone on the field, and rather than repair the equipment, the board opted to replace it. The lights, manufactured by Musco Lighting, is used at sports complexes throughout the world and protected by a 25-year warranty. The configuration of the lighting will allow the district to illuminate the track for public use without having to power lights over the football field.

"We will be able to light the track late at night or early in the morning for people who want to walk," Superintendent Mark Ficken said.

All Purpose Erectors, a Lebanon, Ill. based company is expected to start preliminary work next week and finish installation in less than a month, Ficken said.
