Leadership Boonslick, a collaborative partnership between public entities, non-profit organizations, and local businesses in Cooper and Howard County, held a retreat on Saturday.

The mission of the group is to grow leaders in the area by exposing participants to key people and places in the Boonslick region that make up the community. The retreat, held at The Isle of Capri Casino, brought together the 13 members of the group to reflect on their mission and how they can improve upon it.

The retreat’s key note speaker was Stephanie Fuemmeler, a small business owner and community advocate for Glasgow, Mo. She asked the participants to identify their passion and to volunteer, as there is always a need and always opportunity.

Fuemmeler talked about how volunteerism enriches and benefits not just the organization but also the person volunteering by making you feel grateful, worthy and part of something bigger than yourself. She challenged everyone to get involved with volunteerism.

Leadership Boonslick uses the StrengthsQuest program at its retreats, which is an online assessment tool that identifies an individual’s dominating strengths.

"StrengthsQuest came to us through Central Methodist University, and use it quite a bit there with all of the students that go though career planning," said Kate Fjell, manager of Boonville economic development and spokesperson for Leadership Boonslick.

"It's similar to Meyers-Briggs or color personality tests. It identifies strengths based off of talents." Understanding ones strengths enables leaders to better understand themselves, added Fjell.

Deborah DeGan-Dixon, assistant dean of Central Methodist University, facilitated and led the group through the StrengthsQuest program and will be joining Leadership Boonslick in future sessions.

The benefit of this retreat, said Fjell, is a chance to get together and bond with others in Leadership Boonslick.

"(Boonville) is a small town, but there are still strangers," she said.

This is the first in a series of 8 retreats for Leadership Boonslick.
