Boonville, Mo. -

The New Franklin City Council met for their regular monthly meeting Monday night. Their meeting was similar to many in the Boonslick area as the chief of police asked the council for help keeping ATVs and golf carts off of the city streets.

According to Police Chief Jason Wells, the current ordinance bars motor scooters and motorcycles from city streets. He said the ordinance does not address the usage of ATVs (all terrain vehicles) or golf carts.

Wells and police officer Jeff Glandon said they both have received complaints of people riding around in ATVs and causing a disturbance. When asked for a written statement, the residents refused, Glandon said, in effect leaving the  police department’s “hands ... tied.”

“We have no ordinance to stop it,” said Wells.

“That’s unbelievable, you can ride a 4-wheeler on the city streets but not a motorcycle,” city attorney Greg Robinson said.

“That’s why I’m bringing it up, to get it changed. That book is older than I am,” said Wells.

The majority of council members including Carolyn Hileman agreed, saying unlicensed vehicles should not be driven on the city’s streets.

“I don’t think we should say no to all of them,” said council member Walter Banks.
