When Boonville residents go to the polls on April 6, they’ll be voting not only to determine which candidates take office — they’ll also decide whether to extend a longstanding tax that funds a variety of city services.
Revenue from the .005 percent (one-half of one percent) capital improvement project tax is used toward Boonville’s economic development, parks, streets, public safety and agencies, City Administrator Irl Tessendorf said. The CIP tax is a part of the overall sales tax, that also includes Cooper County and the state.
Put simply, someone who makes a $20 purchase in Boonville pays 10 cents in CIP tax itself.
Citizens for CIP, a Boonville group, is encouraging people to vote in favor of extending the tax.
The recession has hurt sales tax revenue in Boonville. It’s down a couple of percentage points from where it was at this time last year, Tessendorf said.
