The following is a brief of the story. For the full version, see the Wednesday, July 1 print edition of the BDN.

Every year, the Boonville Police Department accumulates bicycles that are found on property of residents who have no knowledge of the bikes or the bikes are recovered through some other means and are never claimed. The result is a cache of bikes that cannot be held indefinitely.

In an effort to return as many of the bikes as possible, the department is asking people who may have lost a bike – or believe it was stolen – to check with the department in the near future before the bikes are re-assigned. That means that they will no longer be at the station but will be the property of another person.

In a program called Restorative Justice, the prison picks up all unclaimed bikes and refurbishes the ones that are salvageable. Offenders will repair and paint the bikes making them presentable and safe before donating the bikes to organizations that will distribute them to under privileged children in Cooper and Howard counties.
