Local shoppers embarked on the day-after-Thanksgiving shopping trips, participating in the event known as “Black Friday.” Lisa Gatlin of Prairie Home got up early this morning, embracing the first Black Friday in her life. “This is the first time I’ve done the sale,” Gatlin said, adding that she was able to do the shopping because her mother stayed home with her two children, whom most of the shopping was for.

The following is a brief of the story. For the full version, see the Friday, Nov. 28 print edition of the BDN Extra.

Day-after-Thanksgiving sale? Black Friday? Call it what you like, it’s here and it’s hectic. The day after Thanksgiving officially kicks off the Christmas shopping season around the world and in a worrisome economy, shoppers still came out for the early morning sales in Boonville.

Locally, stores like WalMart and Orscheln’s Farm and Home held early morning sales, starting as early as 5 a.m.

WalMart stayed open on Thanksgiving Day through the early morning preparing for the sale. Though the store never closed and customers were allowed to be present before 5 a.m., anything on sale for the day after Thanksgiving was not allowed to be purchased until 5 a.m.

Prices were marked down on a variety of merchandise. Items on sale included: DVDs, Blu-Ray discs, HDTV systems, video games, Wii systems, cameras, clothing, jewelry, Christmas decorations, computers and of course, toys.
