Restaurants and hotels reported mixed business during the Civil War re-enactment weekend in Boonville even as organizers of the event say it attracted thousands of people.
A representative of the Boonville Civil War Commemorative Commission will present a report on the First Battle of Boonville re-enactment at the City Council meeting tonight.
"It helped a little," said Bobber Cafe's manager Gayelene Gibson of the event that took place June 17-19. "Saturday and Sundays are our busiest days anyway."
The commemoration of the sesquicentennial of First Battle of Boonville organized by Boonville Civil War Commemorative Commission drew 10,000 visitors to Boonville and 21 vendors, said commission chairperson Deborah Marshall, publisher of the Boonville Daily News. Around 550 re-enactors participated over the weekend in the re-enactment that took place on a farm, five miles from downtown.
On complaints from some on-site food vendors that they didn't do good business, organizers John Holtzclaw said "the weather was too hot to eat."
Though he didn't have any numbers, Holtzclaw said the event had a "positive impact on the community, as restaurants were busy and hotels were full."
"Hotels were all sold out," said Lisa McClary of the Boonville Tourism Department.
All six big hotels in town--Isle of Capri, Hotel Frederick, Holiday Inn, Days Inn, Comfort Inn and Super 8--were full, McClary said.
