One month ago today,  Allen Waldo began his role as chief executive of Cooper County Memorial Hospital.

In a report distributed at Wednesday’s meeting of the facility’s board of trustees, Waldo stated that he has worked to meet all staff members and begin working on improvements to the hospital’s billing system.

“There is not an overnight fix ... . We have some good things in place, and it will be a huge priority for the hospital,” he said. “We do not want to bill incorrectly or make anyone angry. If we get this thing cleaned up sooner rather than later, it will be better for the entire area.”

Also on Wednesday, the board:

  • Heard a proposal by Waldo that the hospital pursue a new buying procedure aimed at securing savings in the future. At least three bidders would be needed for some items needed. A vote on the plan is set for the board's March meeting.
  • Heard about possible effects of the closure of the Audrain Medical Center's psychiatric unit. Chief Nurse Executive Nancy Fredrich said it could result in longer waiting times in the Cooper County hospital's emergency room.
  • Unanimously approved the 2009 Home Health Agency evaluation.
