Boonville, Mo. -

The Boonville Police Department is warning residents of a potential scam.

According to Captain Don Smith, two people have called to report that someone claiming to be from Readers Digest has contacted them asking for money.

Captain Smith said that two men, who identified themselves as Tad Johnson and Kevin Miller, called two Boonville residents to say that they had won $250,000. All that they had to do was meet them at a certain location and bring $2,500 in cash. The people were then told that it was “top secret.”

The potential victims were given a phone number to call with a 514 area code. Captain Smith said that he called the number and spoke with the alleged scam artists. After identifying himself  as being with the police depart the suspects hung up the phone.

Anyone who may have been contacted is encouraged to call the Boonville Police Department at 882-2727 or file a complaint with the Missouri Attorney General's Office. To file a consumer complaint go online to www.ago.mo.gov or call 800-392-8222 to request a form.
