If forgetting her shoes for last night’s game against the Marshall Owls was the worst thing Boonville freshman Morgan Edwards could do, she should do it more often.

While waiting around after the JV game to borrow a teammates pair of shoes, Edwards more than delivered on the basketball court last night while scoring 21 points and pulling down eight rebounds   to lead the Lady Pirates past Marshall 52-41.

Boonville also inched ever so close to the .500 mark for the season with the win at 9-11 overall and 4-5 in the NCMC.

After the game, head coach Joe Henke said he thought the girls came out and played a solid first half. “We did a good job attacking the basket and found the open girl,” Henke said. “However, I am disappointed in our effort in the third quarter. We stepped being aggressive and settled for outside shots or when we did get open looks, we just did not capitalize. I thought the bench gave us some very good minutes (Addy Reardon and Cassidy Renfrow) and we needed them with a few of the starters not feeling very well.”

Of course other than missing her shoes, Edwards literally carried the Lady Pirates in the first quarter while scoring 11 of the team’s 13 points, which included seven straight to start the game.

Boonville also had one of its better rebounding efforts while pulling down 38 boards compared to just 29 for Marshall.

But even then the Lady Pirates had their moments while hitting only 5 of 13 shots in the first quarter and 5 of 14 in the second period. Nonetheless, Boonville led Marshall from the opening tip-off and took a 13-4 lead after one and a 27-14 advantage at the half.

Now the third quarter is a different story as Marshall came out and dictated the tempo of the game while outscoring Boonville 10-2 for the first-four minutes to cut the lead to five at 29-24 with 4:16 left.
The Lady Owls also outscored Boonville 16-8 in the period. However after waking up from their nap, the Lady Pirates went to no other than Edwards, who scored on back-to-back possessions to extend the lead back up to nine at 33-24 with 2:55 left. But even that was short-lived as Marshall came back and outscored Boonville 6-2 on back-to-back threes by freshman Molly Evans.

Now with the lead down to five at 35-30 after three, the Lady Pirates quickly put out the fire in the fourth quarter by outscoring Marshall 8-2 on a basket by sophomore Aly Wessing and senior McKenzie Greis. Greis also buried a three during that span to push the lead back up to 10 at 42-32 with 5:25 remaining. Then, with 4:30 left, Edwards hit 1 of 2 foul shots to make it 43-32.

Marshall never got any closer than eight points for the rest of the game. However after a basket by senior Sheridan Potter to go up by 10 at 48-38 with 2:17 left, the Lady Pirates tried to give the game away with three straight turnovers. Fortunately for Boonville, the Lady Owls were unable to take advantage during that stretch while cutting the lead only to seven at 48-41.

The Lady Pirates then closed out the game at the foul line while hitting 4 of 4 shots for the victory.
Boonville also outscored Marshall 17-11 in the final period.

In addition to leading the team in scoring, Edwards also had three blocked shots and one steal.
Mackenzie Greis finished the game with 15 points, seven assists, three steals and three rebounds, while Aly Wessing added eight points, a team-leading nine rebounds along with two assists and two blocked shots. Sheridan Potter added three points, five rebounds, one steal and one assist, while Addyson Reardon chipped in two points, four rebounds and one assist, Cassidy Renfrow with two points, five rebounds and one assist and Olivia Imhoff with one point, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Lady Pirates also hit on 18 of 46 shots from the field for 39 percent and 14 of 20 from the foul line for 70 percent.

For Marshall, Skylar Simpson finished the game with eight points while Molly Evans tossed in eight.
Boonville’s JV was also victorious against Marshall 33-24.

The Lady Pirates, improving to 10-6 overall and 6-3 in the NCMC, trailed Marshall 12-4 after first period’s end before rallying back with a 29-12 scoring edge for the rest of the game.

Boonville JV coach Jessica Howell said anytime you get a road win, it is great. “I was really proud of the girls for not giving in after the first quarter,” Howell said. “They hit some shots and we rushed our offense a bit, but I knew that we would get comfortable after a little time. I wanted to come out more aggressive, but that’s something we can work toward the next game. I thought Addy (Reardon) was clutch coming in after the first quarter, and Anna Davis was consistent for us throughout the game. Our blocking out must get better as we closeout the rest of the season, and we’ll see if we can’t work toward that next week.”

Addyson Reardon had the game-high for Boonville with 14 points while Anna Davis chipped in 11, Cassidy Renfrow four and Morgan Johnston and Devin Ellebracht each with two points.
The Lady Pirates also converted on 50 percent of their shots from the line by hitting 5 of 10 shots.
