With participation at a recent high, the Boonville bands are preparing to put the fun in fundraising.

On Friday, Jan. 13, the fifth- through eighth-grade bands, along with the Boonville High School Silver Pirate Band, will host the World Famous Boonville Silver Pirate Band Concert and Pie Auction, featuring local celebrity pie auctioneers John Ed and Tim Derendinger. The show starts at 6:45 p.m. at LSE Middle School.

In the past, the concert and pie auction fundraiser has helped with the purchase of uniforms, instruments and trip expenses for the students.

Boonville band director Steve Litwiller said participation in the middle school bands is near an all-time high, with around 160 students in the fifth- and sixth-grade bands.

With those figures comes the possibility of growth within the high school band, making more uniforms and equipment a necessity.

"This combination concert and pie auction is the one and only and best fundraiser we do," Litwiller said. "We have lots of numbers and lots of participation this year and I expect a lot of growth in the younger grades."

Right now, the band likely has enough uniforms to get by, but Litwiller says, "we're studying that closely and won't have a better idea of how many we'll need until later this year. "

The free concert will not only feature swing, performed by the eighth grade band, but also a circus march, contemporary pieces and patriotic anthems. Several selections will include performances by recently named All-District Honor Band and Honorable Mention Band members.

"I believe concerts ought to have a bit of everything," Litwiller said. "We're just hoping to put the fun in fundraising with our music, and our auctioneer is the best."

Students earning membership in the All-District Honorable Mention Band were:
Haley Hilden, flute; Courtney Hutson, Haylee Schwartz, Brad Brinkman, clarinet; Lindsay Friedrich, Caitylyn Ridgway, horn; Aubrey Williamson, trombone; Dylan Schrader, baritone and Kyle Johnson, percussion.

"That's more kids than we've ever had make District Honor Band or the Honorable Mention Band," Litwiller said. "We've just had a bunch of really good kids lately, and I think what band does that keeps the kids in is that we recognize and try to help them recognize that there is a place for them here, and we can accomplish great things if they come and work hard."
