Courtney Hunt, a counselor at Prairie Home R-V School, is the Boonville Daily News' educator of the week and provided written responses to our questions

Age: 29

Family: Fiance, Brandon; dog, Bailey

Experience/ education: I taught middle school science for four years in Moberly and this is my second year as a school counselor in Prairie Home. I graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a bachelor's degree in psychology, and I earned a master's in education degree with an emphasis in school counseling from Stephens College.

Hobbies: I really enjoy camping, hiking, swimming, boating, snowboarding, Mizzou sports, Caridnal baseball, Chief's football, and spending time with my family (especially my two nephews and two nieces).

In several sentences, explain how and why you decided to become and educator. I became a teacher first and foremost because I love working with kids. I love being able to shape students' lives in positive ways. From the time I was in pre-school, I absolutely loved school. I think it's important as an educator to really enjoy the school atmosphere, enjoy learning new things and enjoy trying new things. The best part of my job is getting to know the students on a personal (yet professional) level. I think it is essential to show the students that you care about who they are and where they come from. I also want to have  a family someday, and I know from experience that having a parent in education is a great thing. Teachers do have a lot of time to spend with their families over holidays and summer breaks, and I love that.

Who is a teacher or professor who inspired you and how? My mom is a teacher and that inspired me. Although I never had her as a teacher, I really admire her love of teaching. She truly was an amazing teacher, and it was refreshing to see her love for her students as well as her love of learning.

Who is someone in current events who you and admire and why? There are many people in current events that I really admire, but there is not one person that sticks out in my mind. However, there is a large group of people that I really admire, and they are our servicemen and women. I have the utmost respect for each and every one of them. They put their lives on the line for us on a daily basis so that we can live nice safe lives back here in the U.S.

What are the greatest challenges in education today? One of the greatest challenges in learning today is adjusing to the lack of funding schools get. It is very hard to get services/ supplies/ technology/ teachers that we need in order to best support our students.

What advice can you offer for someone who wants to go into education? Advice I would give to someone going into education today would be to really enjoy working with kids. Teachers should not go into education if they do not like working with kids. You have to love kids and find a way to relate to each other and everyone one of them in order to be a successful teacher.

What teaching moment is most memorable? Memorable teaching moments for me would have to be when I see students have that "ah ha" moment when something just clicks in their brains, and they get a new concept. I love seeing students learn new things.
