Nothing like winning the game on a last-second shot in overtime. But that’s exactly what the Boonville boys junior varsity basketball team did last night in the championship in the Mexico JV Tournament.
While playing to a 46-46 tie at the end of regulation, JV coach Kent Peterson said freshman Ethan Sander hit a shot with 3.2 seconds left in overtime to lead the Pirates past Mexico 50-49.

Of course the game was Boonville’s to win early on while leading Mexico 12-7 after one, 22-14 at the half and 36-23 after three quarters of play. However, in the final period, the Bulldogs rallied back with a 23-10 advantage to tie the game at 46-all.

Boonville then outscored Mexico 4-3 in overtime for the victory.

“We were able to go the length of the floor in 3.2 seconds to hit the winning shot,” Peterson said. “Give Tanner Green credit as he threw a perfect pass to Sander at half-court who in turn hit a running 15 foot jump shot at the buzzer for the win. This is truly one of the most exciting games I have been a part of. We were up by 13 points starting the fourth quarter but give Mexico credit, they didn’t quit. They hit five three-point shots in the fourth coupled by us missing several great looks at close range.”

Peterson said Mexico tied the game with 35 seconds left in regulation on a three-point shot. However with 7.4 seconds left, Peterson said Tanner Green hit 4 of 4 free throws down the stretch, including two that put Boonville up by three points.

“We picked up man-to-man and Ethan Sander knocked the ball away only to have Skylar Harrington from Mexico pick up the ball and shoot a 35 foot desperation shot that went in at the buzzer to tie the game in regulation,” Peterson said. “In overtime, Mexico got up by one and we fouled with 35 seconds left where Mexico missed a one and one. Ethan Kempf hit a jump hook with 11 seconds left off an offensive rebound to put us up by one. Mexico then went the length of the floor and scored setting up the heroics by Sander.

“We played well tonight and should have won by double digits but didn’t make some great looks that we had. Jashon Hockaday had a great game tonight with 10 points, three assists and five steals. Ethan had a great night scoring 12 points and four steals. Tanner Green and Ethan Kempf both were strong inside and scoring and rebounding. This was a great team win and a very exciting game. I am proud of how well the kids played and fought all night to get the win. Ethan made the coach look good at the end of the game.”
