The following is a brief of the story. For the full version, see the Thursday, Aug. 13 print edition of the BDN.
The New Franklin Board of Education received a full agenda at its Wednesday night meeting and discussed multiple issues related to the start of school.
High school Principal Benji Dorson and elementary Principal Malissa Pistel had their first opportunity to address the board of education in their new roles as principals. Their job was to review and make changes to the handbook.
Some of the changes that Pistel presented to the board included one stating that parents may not arrive before 2:30 p.m. to pick up their children. This new rule was added so that parents would not arrive early and wander around the school.
Another handbook change regarding student homework was also addressed. In the past, and from now on, students will have to have their homework planner signed every week by parents. If a student does not get the planner signed he or she will be required to miss a recess. Many on the board said this is unfair to the students and commented that it would punish the student in cases in which parents forget to sign the planner.
Here are the handbook changes made by the New Franklin Board of Education:
1 Parents may not arrive before 2:30 p.m. to pick up students.
2 Middle and high school students will not be allowed to use i-Pods or other music devises, except for teacher required activities.
3 MSHSAA changes require any student athlete involved in an accident involving drugs, alcohol or injury be immediately suspended from sports.
