Sixteen students participated in the second MASH (Missouri Academy of Science and Health) Camp in Cooper County Monday, June 9 through Wednesday, June 11 at the Pilot Grove C-4 Middle School.
The MASH Camp is sponsored through the Mid-Missouri Area Health Education Center. This MASH Camp also received support from the Cooper County Health Improvement Corporation and the Cooper County Memorial Hospital. Kelly Williams from the Area Health Education Center and Christine Boardman, ACES student and summer intern with Mid-MO AHEC office. Jen Kresse, administrative assistant with Mid-MO AHEC and Jessy Goyins, Mid-MOAHEC ACES student, assisted with the activities on the third day of the camp.
In this three day event, students had the opportunity to learn about the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and its programs as well as explore health careers and participate in various hands on activities.
In the first activity on Monday, students had the opportunity to learn about bacteria and experimented with growing bacteria found on common surfaces. Mindy Stegner and James Kirk from Katy Manor Nursing Home assisted with students in the second activity in which the students were taught how to take blood pressure readings and vital signs. The students worked in groups of two to check blood pressure and vital signs. In Monday’s final activity, students participated in several hands-on dental activities including dental charting, dental impressions, and oral bacteria.
