The following is a brief of the story. For the full version, see the Friday, Aug. 21 print edition of the BDN.

The Cooper Lodge No. 36 Bikes-4-Books program is off to another great start.

Last year, there were six participating schools. This year there are 10 schools and 28 bikes. Participating schools in Boonville are: Hannah Cole Primary, David Barton Elementary, LSE Middle School and Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic School. Blackwater, Fayette, New Franklin Elementary, Glasgow, St. Mary’s School in Glasgow and Zion Lutheran in Lone Elm are also participating.

Also participating this year is Wallace Lodge No. 456 in Bunceton. They will be working with Bunceton, Prairie Home, Pilot Grove and St. Joseph Catholic School. California Lodge No. 183 will take care of schools in California, Tipton and Jamestown.

Each school has a reading program and how they handle the Bikes-4-Books is up to the individual principals and teachers. In the past, some schools have had students enter a drawing for each book read. One girls’ bike and one boys’ bike will be given away each semester.
