School’s out in Boonville! Unfortunately, that means that some kids may be missing out on a nutritious meal. The Boonville School District and Open Bible Praise Center are teaming up for the third year to provide healthy lunches for summer school students through the Food 4 Kids program.
Each student attending summer school will receive the bagged lunch as they leave for the day. Last year, the program provided a total of 8,686 lunches during the 24-day program.
The volunteers began preparing lunches at OBPC Monday night and will continue five days a week through the end of the summer school term. Today, the group of about 10 people scrambled to get 340 lunches made for area students. Next week, with BHS beginning summer school, the numbers will be closer to 500.
After three years of participating in the program, Deana Dryer of OBPC said they’re not worried about getting so many lunches done. “We’re finally getting a good system down,” she said.
In addition to the Central Missouri Food Bank in Columbia, Butternut Bread in Boonville also contributes to the summer lunch program.
