The following is a brief of the story. For the full version, see the Wednesday, July 22 print edition of the BDN.

The second year of Thespian Hall Summer Theater Camp is in full swing.  The dynamic three-week summer theatre camp experience for youth ages 9-18, is sponsored by the Friends of Historic Boonville. The camp will culminate in a production of Von Temps +on the Bayou a Mississippi Odyssey, a parody of Homer’s Odyssey set on the Mississippi River.

Thirty-two children ages 9 through 18 signed up for the summer theatre camp  and have been rehearsing five days a week and will continue to rehearse until the show date. Director of the play is Brett Johnson of Columbia, a theatre phd candidate, has a masters and a bachelors of art degree in theatre and is currently in the third year of his doctoral program in theatre at University of Missouri.

The play is written by Mary Barile, a local playwright. Barile is in the process of acquiring her doctoral from the University of Missouri. She is an instructor at Central Methodist University in theatre and is president of the Friends of Historic Boonville. Barile has written plays for both young children and adult audiences but prefers to write for young  theatre creating adaptations of original folktales and myths so the story is more accessible and easier to relate to.
