A development that will provide homes to low-income residents in Boonville has property owners concerned about the effect the government-subsidized project could have on the local economy.
Kemper Village Homes, located on a former golf course, will feature 32 houses available to those who make 60 percent or less of the Cooper County median family income, and eight homes to people of any income level. The $5.8 million project will be located off of Ashley Road.
Jim Edwards, president of the Boonslick Area Landlords Association, is concerned that other property owners will not be able to compete with the $500 monthly rent Kemper is able to offer.
Edwards also said property owners have expressed concern that the St. Louis-based development group would use out-of-town contractors and suppliers.
Ken Nuernberger, a partner in Kemper Village Development, said the bidding process for the project has begun and the development group plans to use area businesses.
