At a special Board of Education meeting on February 2, 2018, Dr. Sarah Marriott was hired as the new Superintendent of the Boonville R-1 School District to replace Dr. Mark Ficken who will be retiring on June 30.
According to Charlie Melkersman, president of the school board, five candidates interviewed for the position and Dr. Marriott was the most qualified. “The entire board is excited and knows Dr. Marriott will move the district forward.”
Melkersman added, “The school board appreciates all Dr. Ficken has done during his 13 years as Superintendent and all the improvements that have taken place during those years.”
Dr. Ficken will be retiring from education at the end of June, but has no definite plans for what’s next. “I’m so proud of the staff and students,” Ficken said, “and of what the district has accomplished during this time.”
When asked his feelings about the board’s decision to hire Dr. Marriott, he said, “I have no concerns whatsoever about her as Superintendent. None. She’s going to do wonderful things here.”
Dr. Marriott is a Boonville graduate and received her undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Her doctoral degree was completed at St. Louis University. Dr. Marriott has served as Assistant Superintendent for Student Services and Direct of Special Education for the Boonville School District for the past three years. Prior to coming to Boonville, she served as Elementary and Middle School Principal and Director of Special Education for the Slater School District.
Dr. Marriott has been in education for 16 years and is the first woman Superintendent of the Boonville R-1 School District.
