BOONVILLE – Direct Support Professional Recognition Week is celebrated annually across the country with special events and ceremonies like these earmarked to honor the tens of thousands of workers who enable people with intellectual, developmental and other significant disabilities and their families to live healthy lives in their communities.

Unlimited Opportunities, Inc. will host a luncheon at UOI in honor of National Direct Support Professionals (DSP) Recognition Week on Thursday, September 14, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.  This event is to honor the work of the 90 direct support professionals who provide services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our community.

Our direct support professionals are hard-working and dedicated men and women. It is through their tireless effort and dedication that individuals with disabilities we support are able to have full lives in our community.  DSP Recognition Week is one way we try to say “thank you” to our hard working staff.  In addition to the luncheon, beginning Monday there will be drawings twice a day with various prizes to be won.  DSP’s will also receive a gift at the luncheon.

Boonslick Industries was established in 1976.  A group of parents, guardians and other concerned citizens decided that a work activity center was needed to provide a quality environment for their family members and friends who were beyond school age and because of their disabilities could not find employment in the community.

The sheltered workshop was opened in the old Archway Cookie factory downtown and started with 15 employees. Currently, the extended employment center provides jobs for 49 individuals.  In 1991 Boonslick Industries joined forces with other groups to establish additional disability services in Cooper County.  Together they created an umbrella agency called Unlimited Opportunities, Inc.  Acting as one agency, UOI offers to the community an array of service options which currently include; group homes, independent living, individual supported living, extended employment center, individual supports program/day programming, life skills, family support, transportation, home-maker services, personal care, respite, and head injury services.

Unlimited Opportunities is committed to promoting independence through person-centered services which empower individuals served to achieve their personal goals with dignity and respect.
