Nearly 150 years after the First Battle of Boonville, the episode is still in the minds of many people. Now, the Boonville Civil War Commemorative Commission is planning a number of events to mark the anniversary of the battle in 2011.
Among those events would be a full-scale reenactment of the battle in June. The commission also has been working to plan signage that would be placed around town describing Boonville’s role in the Civil War. The heritage foundation is designing the signs.
Representatives with Missouri’s Civil War Heritage Foundation approached Boonville historians Barbara Holtzclaw and Mary Ellen McVicker about some kind of commemoration, which has made planning and scheduling easier, they said.
The 2011 reenactment is expected to begin at noon on June 17 and to continue until June 19 with a full-scale reenactment of the battle at 2 p.m. June 18, 150 years to the day of the battle.
