It was after reading Civil War books and finding out more about the Battle of Boonville that John Holtzclaw realized he might have had a relative who fought in the war. Clifton D. Holtzclaw was born in 1825 to a Howard County family, the oldest of 11 children.
Holtzclaw said his research indicates that Clifton Holtzclaw and some of his brothers tried to search for gold in California but returned to their home in Howard County for the 1860 Missouri census. According to reports from the time, the Holtzclaw family had 11 slaves, and its members were prominent farmers in Howard County. Because of this, Holtzclaw said, male family members made a decision to join the Missouri State Guard.
Clifton Holtzclaw apparently made his way up through the ranks and also was involved in the First Battle of Boonville.
