A yearlong period of festivities began today to commemorate the First Battle of Boonville with the unveiling of a plaque on Main Street and a proclamation by Mayor Julie Thacher.
Boonville Civil War Commemorative Commission co-chair Mary Ellen McVicker greeted everyone in attendance and talked about the historical significance of the area.
"One hundred forty-nine years ago today on this very ground, you would not be smiling," McVicker said. "You might see a lot of people bleeding to death. At 11:15 a.m., 149 years ago today, the mayor of Boonville surrendered the town to the Union forces who would occupy the town until the end of the war."
The panel revealed today sits on what used to be the Vollrath Farm, where part of the battle took place.
