Boonville Pirates wrestling coach Kyle Newham knew that his team might be going into a lions den last night in the conference opener against the Fulton Hornets.

With one returning state medalist and several state qualifiers back from last year’s team, Newham said he knew going in that Fulton would be a much improved team. Of course it didn’t help that Boonville was open at 103, 135 and 145 or that three starters sat out last night’s match either due to injuries or sickness.

Add it up and it’s no wonder Fulton recorded wins in seven out of the 10 matches for a 46-24 victory.
While the loss dropped Boonville to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the NCMC, Newham said the wrestlers didn’t start off very well but did make some minor improvements for the mistakes they made on Tuesday against Sedalia Smith-Cotton.
