Survive and advance.

That’s the motto the Boonville Pirates basketball team used for last night’s game against School of the Osage in the opening round of the Class 4 District 10 Tournament at Eldon.

As the only boy’s game on tap last night, the No. 4 Boonville Pirates basketball team held off a fourth quarter rally by fifth-seeded Osage for a 51-49 victory.

The Pirates, improving to 12-13 overall, will now have the dubious task of facing top-seeded Jeff City Helias in the semifinal round on Wednesday, Feb. 22 starting at 6 p.m. In the other semifinal game on Wednesday, No. 2 Eldon will play third-seeded Fulton at 7:30 p.m.

Commenting on last night’s win over Osage, head coach Scott Floyd said his team shot the ball extremely well in the first half.

“In particular, Tyler Peterson was able to scorch the nets to the tune of 22 first half points,” Floyd said. “A change in defense to man-to-man also halted the outside shooting of the Indians and we were able to distance ourselves from Osage. Osage played much better defense in the second half which allowed them to claw their way back into the game. We should have increased the lead but we were not able to take advantage at the free-throw line. Fortunately, Osage just ran out of time and we were able to eke out the win. However, at this point in the season, we were able to survive to play another day.”

Of course if the Pirates are going to have a chance at knocking off the tournament’s No. 1 seed, they will have to shoot better than 53 percent from the charity stripe. They will also have to take better care of the ball in the fourth quarter after allowing Osage to rally from an eight-point deficit after three with a 15-9 advantage in the final period.

Needless to say, Boonville got the start they were looking for in the game against Osage while hitting 7 of 15 shots from the field to lead the Indians 19-17.

Sophomore guard Tyler Peterson also got hot at the right time for the Pirates. With starting point guard Damario Walker sitting out the game with a high ankle sprain, Peterson had little trouble picking up the slack while finishing with 12 of the team’s 19 points in the first quarter and 10 of the team’s 17 points in the second period.

Osage senior Jared Edwards was equally as good for the Indians while finishing the first half with 17 of the team’s 23 points.

Although the lead stretched to 13 at the break for Boonville, the Indians led by one on two different occasions in the first quarter while the Pirates held a 36-22 advantage with 25.9 seconds left after a basket by junior Tanner Green.

Boonville also closed out the first half hitting 12 of 26 shots from the field for 46 percent.

While dominating the Indians on both ends of the floor in the first half, the Pirates came out like a team walking on egg shells in the third quarter while scoring only six points. But even then while getting outscored by Osage 11-6, Boonville still led by eight at 42-34 with one period remaining.
Of course give credit where credit is due. While holding Peterson scoreless in the second half, the Indians also made it interesting down the stretch by reeling off six straight points during a minute span to cut the lead to four at 47-43 with 3:24 left.

But even that was short-lived as Boonville responded with back-to-back baskets by Gus Kemp to make it 51-43 with 2:16 remaining. From that point on in the ballgame, the Indians did everything they could to close the game while picking up a three-point play and a three by Edwards to cut the lead to two at 51-49 with 8.8 seconds left. The Pirates then tried to give the game away by missing the front end of a one and one while allowing Osage to get a shot off at the buzzer only to come up short.
Tyler Peterson finished the game for Boonville with 24 points and six rebounds.

Holden Hinkle had 10 points and six boards while Gauge Sharp added seven points and six rebounds, Jay Barnhart with six points and seven rebounds, Gus Kemp with four points and six rebounds and Tanner Green with two points.

For Osage, Jared Edwards tossed in 32 points.
