For the second year in a row, the Fulton Lady Hornets basketball team sent the Boonville Lady Pirates packing in the opening round of the Class 4 District 10 Tournament in Eldon.
Although the two split during the regular season in the North Central Missouri Conference, the Lady Hornets played role of the spoiler last night by beating Boonville 52-49.
While the loss dropped Boonville to 10-15 overall, head coach Joe Henke said the girls came out and played a great first half of basketball but lost their momentum in the half by giving up seven three-pointers. “In the second half, we shot 6 of 26 from the field for 23 percent and just could not finish the game,” Henke said. “I thought the girls played extremely hard, but just had a difficult time finishing around the basket. I thought Addyson Reardon really gave us a great spark off the bench. This game, like the season, was a roller coaster of play. We played great most of the game, but then had lapses of play that allowed Fulton back in the game.”
The Lady Pirates couldn’t have played any better in the first quarter while hitting 7 of 12 shots from the field and reeling off 11 straight points during a three minute stretch to go up by 10 at 15-5 with 2:33 left.
Both teams also combined for seven three-pointers in the first period, three of which came by the hand of senior Mackenzie Greis. Freshman Addyson Reardon had the only three with 54 seconds left to put the Lady Pirates on top by 12 at 21-9.
The Lady Hornets kept the score close, though. Trailing 21-15 after one, Fulton rallied back to cut the lead to one at 28-27 with 1:52 left in the half. However in the final minute and 34 seconds, Boonville responded with a three and a two by Greis to extend the lead back to four at 32-28. Then, to closeout the scoring in the half, senior Lola Weiss hit two free throws to cut the lead back to two at 32-30.
Although Fulton outscored Boonville 15-11 in the second quarter, Greis appeared to have the better half while scoring 20 of the team’s 32 points. The Lady Pirates also finished the half hitting 12 of 25 shots for 48 percent.
With the momentum clearly shifting to Fulton after a strong second quarter, the Lady Hornets added to Boonville’s misery in the third quarter after rallying from a six-point deficit at 38-32 with 5:36 with 11 straight points during a three-point span to go up by five at 43-38.

The Lady Pirates had the last laugh, however, in the period when freshman Morgan Edwards completed a three-point play to cut the lead to two at 43-41.
Freshman Addyson Reardon then took charge in the fourth quarter while scoring six straight points to give the Lady Pirates a 47-43 lead with 6:33 left. What happened after that is anybodys guess as Fulton came back and outscored Boonville 8-2 for the rest of the game to garner the victory.
Despite losing the game by three, the Lady Pirates had plenty of chances while missing a shot with 20 seconds left. Then, after Fulton hit 1 of 2 foul shots to go up 52-49, Boonville had another chance to tie the game with 11.7 seconds remaining. Unfortunately for Boonville, the Lady Hornets were right there by blocking a shot in the final seconds.
Stephanie Hughes led three players in double figures for Fulton with 15 points. Corri Hamilton chipped in 14 while Bailey Mitchell added 11.
