New Franklin boys basketball coach Jim Schlotzhauer knew at some point during the season that his Bulldogs were going to finally win a close game.
Although the 2011-12 season has been a roller coaster ride thus far, the Bulldogs finally got one to go their way Friday night in CAC action at Madison with a 71-67 victory in overtime.
As for the New Franklin girls, they had a little easier time while winning 41-27.
Schlotzhauer said his team played hard for the whole game. “It was a back and forth game,”
Schlotzhauer said. “I thought both teams played hard until the end, but we did enough to come out on top.”
The Bulldogs definitely had the upper hand against Madison while leading 9-7 after one, 31-25 at the half and 48-41. However, in the final period, the Panthers rallied back with a 18-11 advantage to tie the game at 59-all. Meanwhile, in the overtime period, New Franklin outscored Madison 12-8 for the victory.
Alex Holem had the team-high for New Franklin with 17 points. Tyler Hull chipped in 15, Tyler White 14, Ryley Lyons 11 and Dalton Welbern each with seven.
For Madison, Jacob Youse tossed in 19 points.
As for the New Franklin girls, they led Madison 14-6 after one, 26-9 at the half and 31-15 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, Madison outscored the Lady Bulldogs 12-10 to cut the lead back to 14.
New Franklin coach Chris McGowan said the girls struggled to score at the beginning of the game and were down 6-0 after the first-four minutes. “After that slow start we played pretty well the rest of the first half,” McGowan said. “We didn’t play with a lot of intensity in the second half and didn’t execute all that well offensively. At times we tried to make things too difficult and make tough passes, but we were able to make enough plays to hold on and get the win.”
Aly Hundley led the Lady Bulldogs, who improved to 14-10 overall and 6-5 in the CAC, with 14 points along with six assists, five rebounds and two steals.
Madi Lyons finished the game with eight points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal while Jasmyne Boggs added six points, 13 rebounds, one steal and one assist, Kalani Pihana with four points, seven rebounds, three steals and one assist, Amanda Cook with two points, six rebounds and one steal, Emily Hendrix with two points, two assists and one rebound, Sara Montgomery with two points, two rebounds and one steal and Derian Dodson with two points.
Madison was led by Staci Harlow with 12 points.
