The Glasgow boys and girls basketball teams played the role of a spoiler Friday night during Homecoming at New Franklin.

Although it wasn’t pretty by any means, the Lady Yellowjackets defeated New Franklin 34-30 behind the shooting of freshman Abby Thompson with 15 points and three steals. As for the Glasgow boys, they won by a little bigger margin but the wear and tear of playing three games in four days took its toll as the Yellowjackets struggled throughout the game before pulling away for a 58-45 triumph.

While the win improved Glasgow’s record to 19-3 overall and 9-1 in the Central Activities Conference, head coach Molly Monnig said New Franklin frustrated the Lady Yellowjackets with their defense in the first half.

“We also missed a lot of easy baskets in the paint,” Monnig said. “Erin Reynolds helped jump start us in the third quarter with a steal which led to two free throws. “Erin then had a nice take to the basket to give us a four point lead. Abby Thompson had a strong fourth quarter offensively with eight points. We were able to overcome some adversity early in the first half when we couldn’t score. We continued to play strong, effective defense. Both teams were very evenly matched. We just seemed to get the shots to fall when we needed them to. New Franklin is a tough team and it’s always tough to come away with a win there. I was proud of our girls perseverance and determination.”

The Lady Yellowjackets definitely persevered in the first period while getting a lone field goal from freshman Abby Thompson. New Franklin on the other hand opened the game with back-to-back baskets by sophomore Kalani Pihana and freshman Aislinn Himmelberg to go up 5-0 before the basket by Thompson to end the period.

Of course the second quarter was a little better for Glasgow, as the Lady Yellowjackets began to find the basket while outscoring New Franklin 9-6. But even then both teams went into the half tied at 11-11.

While Glasgow struggled to hit shots at point-blank range in the first quarter, the Lady Bulldogs couldn’t seem to buy a basket in the second quarter with just one field goal by sophomore Aly Hundley, which turned out to be a three-pointer. Of course the Lady Bulldogs didn’t take many shots in the period, as they were 3 of 4 from the charity stripe.

Sophomore Erin Reynolds also began to find the basket a little more in the third quarter for Glasgow. While the Lady Yellowjackets outscored New Franklin 13-8, Reynolds had six of her 10 points in the period.

Glasgow also went on a 7-0 run during a minute span to go from leading by just one at 17-16 to make it a eight-point ballgame at 24-16 with 1:19 left.

The Lady Bulldogs didn’t go down without a fight, though. With two seconds left in the period, Hundley completed a three-point play to cut the lead back to five at 24-19.

Something bizzare then happened to start the fourth quarter. On an in-bounds pass, a player for New Franklin made a lay-up in Glasgow’s basket to give the Lady Yellowjackets a seven-point lead at 26-19. The Lady Bulldogs never fully recovered after that while trailing by 11 on two different occasions at 32-21 and 34-23. However in the final two minutes and 31 seconds, New Franklin rallied back with seven straight points to cut the lead back to four.

Despite the loss, which dropped New Franklin to 13-9 overall and 5-4 in the CAC, head coach Chris McGowan said he was very pleased with the effort putforth by the girls throughout this game.

“We had a couple of defensive breakdowns where we didn’t get out and challenge the shooters very well, and Glasgow is too good of a shooting team to allow them to shoot open shots. Offensively, we had 28 turnovers which is entirely too many in order for us to be successful.”

Erin Reynolds finished the game for Glasgow with 10 points, five rebounds and three steals.
Nikki Fuemmeler added seven points and 10 rebounds while Peyton Davis chipped in three points, two steals and one assist, Trisha McMillan with two points and Alex Davis with two assists.
For New Franklin, Aly Hundley had 17 points, seven rebounds and one assist.

Kalani Pihana contributed seven points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist, while Jasmyne Boggs added two points, 13 rebounds and one steal, Aislinn Himmelberg with two points, three assists, two steals and two rebounds, Madi Lyons with two points, two rebounds and two steals and Emily Hendrix with three rebounds and one steal.

As for the Glasgow boys, they struggled to say the least against New Franklin but still managed to lead the Bulldogs 12-7 after first period’s end.

However, in the second quarter, the Bulldogs opened the period with back-to-back threes by junior Tyler White to give New Franklin the lead at 13-12. The Bulldogs also led by four in the same period after sophomore Riley Lyons hit two free throws and Tyler Hull scored to give New Franklin a 20-16 advantage.

But even that was short-lived as Glasgow rallied back with a 11-2 scoring edge over the final four minutes and 22 seconds to go up by five (27-22) at the half.

The Yellowjackets never trailed after that while outscoring New Franklin 17-14 in the third quarter, which included seven straight points to open the half, to make it 44-36. Glasgow also held a 14-9 advantage in the final period to garner the victory.

New Franklin coach Jim Schlotzhauer said his team played hard for four quarters. “Glasgow is a very solid team that had some role players step up and win the game for them,” Schlotzhauer said.

Junior Austin Stockhorst finished the game with 15 points for Glasgow, who improved to 19-3 overall and 9-1 in the CAC, while Dillon Yung tossed in 12.

For New Franklin, who dropped to 8-4 overall and 3-6 in the conference, Tyler White had 15, Tyler Hull 12, Tanner White eight, Ryley Lyons and Alex Holem each with four and Dalton Welbern with two.
