The Boonville Lady Pirates basketball team had another one of those games last night on the road against the Fulton Lady Hornets.
While it took a great effort in the fourth quarter to push the game to overtime tied at 48-all, what happened after that is anybodys guess as Fulton literally ran away with the victory by outscoring Boonville 8-1 for a 56-49 victory.
Of course it didn’t help that Boonville, who dropped to 7-11 overall and 2-5 in the NCMC, struggled to find the basket in the first quarter while trailing Fulton 15-7. Nonetheless, the Lady Pirates continued to battle on the road while outscoring Fulton 17-14 in the second period to cut the lead to five at 29-24. Meanwhile, after both teams put up 10 points in the third quarter, Boonville came back and outscored Fulton 14-9 to tie the game at 48-all. Unfortunately for the Lady Pirates, they never got any closer in the ballgame as Fulton held a seven-point advantage in overtime.
Despite dropping their fourth straight game, head coach Joe Henke said he was proud of the effort of the girls in the second half. “I thought we came out and played hard to get back into the game,"Henke said. “That is good, but we just cannot keep digging ourselves into a hole early in the game. We continue to struggle shooting from the floor and are looking for a few players to step up on the offensive end.”
Corri Hamilton led the scoring attack in the game for Fulton with 18 points. Ashley Sessler chipped in six while Rachel Washington added five.
For Boonville, Mackenzie Greis finished the game with 21 points, five steals, three assists and one rebound.
Aly Wessing had 10 points, six rebounds, four steals and four assists, while Addyson Reardon added five points, three rebounds and two assists, Morgan Edwards with four points, nine rebounds, one steal and one assist, Olivia Imhoff with four points, six steals, three assists and three rebounds, Cassidy Renfrow with three points, six rebounds and one assist and Kristin Hoff with one point and one rebound.
In the junior varsity game, Boonville turned back Fulton 24-19.
The Lady Pirates, improving to 9-5 overall and 5-2 in the NCMC, led Fulton 6-2 after one, 8-7 at the half and 17-13 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, Boonville outscored Fulton 7-6 for the victory.
Boonville JV coach Jessica Howell said she was proud of the girls to come away with a road win but this was the most casual game they have played all season. “The girls did not look to have too much drive on offense or defense, and we played at their level the entire game,” Howell said. “A win is a win, and I am happy with that, but we have some tough games next week and we cannot come out with that intensity and expect to compete.”
Anna Davis led the charge offensively for Boonville with seven points. Addyson Reardon chipped in six, Carley Esser three and Brittany Perry, Morgan Johnston, Anna Terlep and Makenzie Ficken each with two points.
The Lady Pirates also finished the game hitting 1 of 4 shots from the line for 25 percent.
