Pilot Grove’s Kerigan Wessing and Kendall Kraus did their part Friday night while leading the Tigers in a sweep against the Prairie Home Panthers in CCAA at Prairie Home.

While Wessing finished the game with a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a 67-47 win over Prairie Home, Kraus was equally as strong around the basket while pouring in a game-high 21 points as the Pilot Grove boys derailed the Panthers 62-46.

Pilot Grove girls coach Landon Daniel said what started out to be a very slow and sloppy start for the Lady Tigers turned out to be a solid conference win.

“With four players in double figures, it was a team effort by part and a good shooting night for our club,” Daniel said. “One thing we did extremely well was rebound the basketball with 27 boards as a team. But too many of those offensive rebounds came off bunnies that we missed and need to finish. Overall, a good conference win and a good comeback from a previous loss earlier in the week.”

Of course the Lady Panthers kept the game close for the first-eight minutes against Pilot Grove while trailing by just two at 11-9. However it was pretty much all Pilot Grove after that while holding a 23-11 advantage in the second quarter to go up by 14 at 34-20. Meanwhile, in the third quarter, the Lady Tigers picked up where they left off in the first half by outscoring Prairie Home 22-12 to make it 56-32.

The Lady Panthers didn’t go down without a fight, though. In the final period, Prairie Home outscored Pilot Grove 15-11 to cut the lead to 20.

Prairie Home coach Jesse Oswald said he knew this was going to be a tough one and although they were able to stay with Pilot Grove for about 12 minutes, their speed and good shooting allowed them to go on some runs. “We had a lot of people in foul trouble early and it really hurt us in attacking their press and keeping them off of the glass,” Oswald said.

In addition to scoring 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds for Pilot Grove, who improved to 12-9 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA, Wessing also finished the game with five steals and one assist.

Melissa Schlotzhauer added 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Kellie Dillner had 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals, Randi Kellerman with 10 points, eight rebounds and one blocked shot, Hailey Bader with six points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals, McKenzi Schuster with six points, two assists and one rebound, Lauren Vollrath with four points, six rebounds, two assists, one steal and one blocked shot, Kennedy Gerling with two points and five rebounds and Kori Marshall with four steals, three assists and two rebounds.

For Prairie Home, who dropped to 6-10 overall and 0-3 in the CCAA, Taylor Zey led the Lady Panthers in both scoring and rebounding with 16 points and eight boards. She also had one steal.
Katlynn Watson finished the game with nine points, five rebounds, two steals and two assists, while Kendra Stinson added eight points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist, Brooke Emmerich with five points, four rebounds, two steals and two assists, Kohlie Stock with three points, two rebounds and one assist, Krista Small with two points, seven rebounds and one steal, Kristynn Watson with two points and one steal and Jessie Kennedy with two points.

As for the Pilot Grove boys, they led Prairie Home from the opening tip-off and took a 32-15 lead at the half. The Panthers, meanwhile, held a 31-30 advantage in the second half to cut the lead to 16.

Pilot Grove coach Rick Grunden said the boys came out in the first half and played with a lot of control on both ends of the floor.

“Although we are young, I feel like we have been playing well this year,” Grunden said. “We knew that our mental toughness would be just as important as our physical toughness for this game. We didn’t try to do anything fancy, we just came out and executed well. Defensively, we established some things that let us get out in transition and we were able to hold them to only 15 points in the first half. Offensively, we played a balanced game inside and outside. Junior forward Kendall Kraus worked the ball for us and helped out well on defense. All in all, it was an excellent team effort on our part.”

Colton Glenn chipped in 13 points for the Tigers, who improved to 11-10 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA, while Trevor Day added 10, Sean Lorenz and Jake Leverton each with eight and Dylan Twenter with two.

Prairie Home coach Jesse Oswald said this was a very tough game to lose. “We didn’t come out with much fire or intensity and Pilot Grove sniffed that out and really took it to us,” Oswald said. “Credit to them because they are a very good, smart team and they didn’t force anything or make mistakes. They definitely played a better game and really let us have it. They were very well coached and well prepared and built a nice lead and never got in a hurry.”

Kody Utterback had the team-high for Prairie Home, who dropped to 12-6 overall and 2-2 in the CCAA, with 14 points and three rebounds.

Rayce Kendrick chipped in 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals while Sam Distler added seven points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal, Trever Huth with six points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist, Jonathan Brandes with four points and two rebounds and Tyler Loesing with two points and two rebounds.
