Bill Stouffer, District 21 Senator, Republican
"When it comes to providing a world-class education to all Missouri students, the stakes are extremely high," writes Stouffer in a column. "If we are to compete in the global economy, we must have a skilled work force. Among the issues related directly to this topic in 2012 is a look at school reform.
"As a society, we are failing kids by not providing them with equal educational opportunities — these are the same kids who often end up in prison, poverty, and in some instances with a death sentence because they have gone down the wrong path. We have some of the best teachers in the United States right here in rural Missouri. However, this is not always the case in urban schools. I have visited urban schools where teachers show up every other day to “teach.” Meanwhile, students pass through grades without the ability to read.
"Education must be a top priority, not just for job opportunities, but for our students."
Samuel Graves, District 6 Congressman, Republican
U.S. Congressman Sam Graves inserted several provisions into the Federal Aviation Administration Reform Bill that is headed for the President’s desk. Graves was able to secure language for several aviation priorities.
“It was a big win for general aviation to keep user fees out of this bill,” said Graves. “We are going to have to be vigilant and be prepared to educate members on why user fees are a bad idea.”
Graves was able to attach language to protect through-the-fence agreements, which allow access to airports by those who have hangar homes on adjacent privately owned property. The language would protect existing agreements and allow future deals between airports and adjacent residential property owners.
Jay Nixon, Governor of Missouri, Democrat
Gov. Jay Nixon submitted an amendment to his recommended budget for Fiscal Year 2013 that restores $40 million in funding for Missouri's public colleges and universities.
As announced earlier today by Attorney General Chris Koster, Missouri is expected to receive a total of more than $140 million in benefits under a proposed settlement by states' attorneys general with the nation's five largest mortgage banks over flawed and fraudulent foreclosure practices that led to the housing crisis. Of that total amount, the Governor's budget amendment directs $40 million to Missouri's public colleges and universities from the state's General Revenue fund.
"This has been a lengthy and extremely complex settlement process, and I commend Attorney General Koster for his dedicated and persistent leadership at every stage of the negotiations," Gov. Nixon said. "This settlement with America's largest mortgage banks will help the states and individual consumers continue their economic recovery."

Claire McCaskill, US Senator, Democrat
U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today released the following statement in honor of Black History Month:
"Black History Month serves as an opportunity to recommit ourselves to an America where everybody is equal, and everybody has a fair shot at success. It's a chance for us to honor the countless contributions of African Americans to the rich history of our country-including here in Missouri-and to recall the painful struggles of those who've fought for a more perfect union. I join all Missourians in paying tribute to those Americans, and I look forward to continuing the fight for equality and prosperity for every single Missouri family."
Roy Blunt, US Senator, Republican
U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.) commended the U.S. Senate’s passage of the “FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012” conference report today, which includes a key provision that originated as a Blunt amendment to ensure airports have the opportunity to apply for the screening process that best meets their needs while maintaining the same critical level of security.
“I’m proud that Congress passed this bipartisan FAA authorization bill in order to establish long-term priorities and bring much-needed stability to our aviation system,” said Blunt.
